Step 1: We talk through what your tooth needs
Every appointment starts with a conversation. We want to know what brought you in, what you’ve been feeling, and what you’re hoping to walk away with. That might be a tooth that hurts when you bite, an old filling that cracked, or a recommendation from another dentist that you’d like a second opinion on before committing to anything.
We will examine the tooth, review any symptoms, and take any needed digital x-rays or scans. The goal is to make sure a crown is truly the right treatment before we move forward.
Step 2: We explain why a crown is recommended
A crown is a full-coverage restoration that protects and rebuilds a tooth. We may recommend a crown when a tooth has too much damage for a filling to hold up well. That can happen with large cavities, cracks, worn-down teeth, old failing restorations, or teeth that need extra protection after root canal therapy.
If a simpler option can work, we will tell you. If a same-day crown is the better choice, we will explain what we see and why the tooth needs more support.
Step 3: We prepare the tooth gently
Once the plan is clear, we numb the area so you can stay comfortable. Then we gently remove damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth structure. We shape the tooth so that the crown fits securely and feels natural when you bite.
This step is careful and precise. A crown has to fit your tooth, your bite, and your smile, so preparation matters. Our team checks in with you throughout the visit. We want the experience to feel smooth, never rushed.
Step 4: We scan your tooth digitally
This is where CEREC technology changes the crown experience. Instead of using traditional impression material, we use a 3D scanner to create a digital model of your tooth and surrounding teeth. For many patients, this is one of the most pleasant differences because there is no goopy, gaggy impression tray.
The scan gives us a detailed view of the prepared tooth, nearby teeth, and bite. That information helps us design a crown that fits your mouth, not just the single tooth.
Step 5: We design your crown on-screen
After the scan, we digitally design your crown. We look at the size, shape, bite, and contours so the new crown can blend naturally with your existing teeth. We also consider how it will function when you chew and how it will look when you smile.
This is one of the best parts of same-day CEREC dentistry. The design process happens right here in our office, instead of being sent to an outside dental lab for a separate appointment later.
Step 6: CEREC mills your custom crown
Once the design is ready, CEREC technology mills your crown from ceramic material. While the crown is being made, you can sit back and relax. The ceramic material is selected and customized to match your natural teeth as closely as possible in shape and color.
This is the step that makes a one-visit dental crown possible. Instead of wearing a temporary crown while a lab makes the final version, your custom restoration is created during the same appointment.
Step 7: We check the fit, color, and bite
Before bonding the crown, we try it in and check the details. We look at how the crown sits on the tooth, how it contacts neighboring teeth, how it looks in your smile, and how it feels when you bite down. Small adjustments can be made so the crown feels comfortable and balanced.
This part matters because a crown should not feel bulky, high, or strange. It should feel like it belongs.
Step 8: We bond the crown in place
Once everything looks and feels right, we bond the crown securely to your tooth. After the crown is placed, we do a final bite check and polish. We will also give you simple care instructions so you know what to expect once the numbness wears off.
You leave with your final crown in place. No temporary. No second visit for final placement. No waiting weeks to finish the repair.
What same-day crowns can help fix
